To Boldly Go By Leo - 5/12/09 10:00pm

Ling and I saw Star Trek. It was pretty good. Alright, maybe it was awesome. Possible contender for movie of the year. It was so good we went to see it twice in the same weekend. Ling saw it thrice. I picked up on certain moments because they were god damn blatant. It doesn’t take much convincing, unless you’re someone who immediately jumps to denial out of fear. Look, it’s ok. They’re best friends.

Back to the actual film, it’s a fucking bad ass movie that you should go see if you haven’t already, and if you have seen it, go see it again. Hopefully by now the basement dwellers have dispersed from the theaters. I had the misfortune of sitting next to one on the first screening. Now, there was nothing offensive upon first glance at this…creature. No offending odor, no eye-catching and mentally scarring outfit. It was just one comment, enough to ruin the movie experience, albeit temporarily, for me.

There’s a part in the film where a major plot point is explained. This guy whispered to himself “Ah, so it’s not canon!”

Now, how could a small utterance, so tiny that you have to be sitting next to this person to hear, be so horrendous? That one sentence was enough to distract me from the movie, bring me back to the real world, and ruin the finely crafted immersion I’d been going through the past hour and a half. Seriously, this dude can go fuck himself.

I’ve learned, through hearsay, that the diehard Star Trek fans are upset with the new movie, because now Star Trek is going to be popular. This mentality has some merits, I guess? Put your protective headgear on, this is going to be a journey into some dark fathoms of stupidity. Jokes aside, I can see where these people might be coming from. They’ve been fans for years, and the influx of a more “mainstream” crowd is unfair to their tribulations. They might feel like “hey, we worked for this, ok? We were there.” Or they just might not want Star Trek to be bro-i-fied. I think that J.J. Abrams did a great job here, even if he has a hard on for time travel stories. Star Trek has been placed in good hands. Hopefully he’ll repeat his success, or hand the torch off to a worthy next.

I’m in the throes of some sinus infection bullshit right now, along with the school quarter rushing to a close. Some of you have probably noticed the updates arriving later and later in the day. Just a fair warning: there’s a chance we might miss a few days as the weeks go by. We’ll still try for the one-a-week schedule, I just want you all in the know.
